Schmallenberg update: virus now confirmed in Wiltshire
Schmallenberg virus (SBV) has now been identified in samples submitted from 58 farms across 11 counties - the latest of which has been discovered on premises in Wiltshire.
Schmallenberg virus (SBV) has now been identified in samples submitted from 58 farms across 11 counties - the latest of which has been discovered on premises in Wiltshire. 
Areas of the UK currently classed as being at comparatively higher risk – in line with the plume modeling data from the summer, which models areas at risk of midge incursion from northern Europe – include:
- Dorset,
- Devon,
- Cornwall,
- Somerset,
- Gloucestershire, and
- Wiltshire.
This also suggests an increased risk for South Wales.
The majority of the GB cases have, so far, been diagnosed in sheep, although 3 premises have seen the virus confirmed in calves. No goats, so far, have been identified as being affected.
Schmallenberg Virus is not a notifiable disease, but farmers and vets should remain vigilant and report any suspicious cases to AHVLA for testing as part of our enhanced surveillance, says DEFRA.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control suggests that there is a low likelihood of any risk to public health.
