PRID trials show benefit for inducing non-cycling cows
Trials have demonstrated the efficacy of the intravaginal progesterone device PRID combined with a prostaglandin PGF2α and PMSG (eCG) injection in inducing heat, in cows presenting true anoestrus.
The results have been published in the third of CEVA Animal Health’s series of fertility newsletters that are circulated free of charge to large animal veterinary practices.
The randomised, parallel, multicentric study involved 75 non-pregnant beef suckler cows. Half were treated with PRID combined with Enzaprost and PMSG, and the remainder treated with placebo formulations.
A total of 83.95 per cent of cows returned to cyclicity in the PRID group compared to 36.45 per cent in the control group. There was also a dramatic difference in the rate of synchronisation within the PRID group which was recorded at 74.1 per cent compared with 6.9 per cent in the control group.
